United MileagePlus Devaluation for First Class Partner Awards
United Airlines surprised MileagePlus today with a massive devaluation on first class international awards. While United itself doesn’t offer international first class, it does offer the opportunity to redeem miles for first class fares on Star Alliance partners.
If you check award pricing on Lufthansa and All Nippon Airways you will see a huge increase in the number of MileagePlus miles required for first class travel.
Lufthansa’s first-class cabin which usually costs 121,000 miles one-way, has now jumped to 154,000 miles. That is a 28% increase for travel between United States and Europe.
It gets even worse for All Nippon Airways. ANA first class awards between the United States and Japan have jumped by 100%, going from 121,000 MileagePlus miles to 242,000 miles one-way.
The price increases are not across the board. Domestic travel for example is not affected.
