Chaos Erupts at Mexican Airports
The US State Department is warning Americans in certain parts of Mexico to “shelter in place” amid a spike in violence and criminal activity after the Mexican government killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Several airlines are suspending operations in Mexico’s Puerto Vallarta airport and videos show panicked travelers at Guadalajara airport.
“Due to ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity, US citizens in the following locations should shelter in place until further notice: Jalisco State (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas State (including Reynosa and other municipalities), areas of Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State,” the State Department wrote on X.
More than 10 vehicles were torched on the main access roads to Puerto Vallarta airport. Air Canada, WestJet, and several U.S. carriers have canceled or diverted dozens of flights, leaving thousands of tourists stranded at their resorts. At GDL, panic broke out as gunmen reportedly entered the terminal. The airport is currently under the control of the National Guard, and all commercial traffic is grounded.
