Starting on Sunday 4/22 till 4/28/2018 there’s a new Staples Mastercard Gift Card promotion. This one is different from previous offers. Instead of a rebate, they have removed the purchase fee on $200 Mastercard Gift cards. This is a good opportunity for free credit card rewards, especially when combined with one of the Chase Ink cards [5X Ultimate Rewards] the deal becomes much better.
How to Maximize Profits
We have seen better deals from Staples, where the rebate gave you a profit. But this could be seen as a better deal since it doesn’t require to fill out any rebates and wait for a gift card in the mail and there’s no household limit. But, you’re limited to $2,000 in gift card purchases every day.
So for every $200 MasterCard gift card you buy, you can earn 1,000 Chase UR points if you’re using your Chase Ink Plus/Cash card. You could also try a Amex SimplyCash for 5% back, but there were reports that it wasn’t earning that rate at Office Depot on gift card purchases. Let me know if you test it out.
How To Liquidate Gift Cards
Mastercard Gift Cards are not as easy to use as Visa. You can still use them at WalMart to purchase money orders, but you need to quickly hit cancel on the keypad after swiping to switch to debit and it doesn’t always work. You can also use them for bill pay at Walmart and Kmart. And if everything else fails, you can always use them for everyday spend everywhere Mastercard is accepted.
Guru’s Wrap-Up
Staples and Office Depot have had plenty of gift card deals recently. This one is different and seems to be more scalable as there’s no household limit. I would suggest going to your nearest location early on Sunday because stock runs out quickly.

One of these MCGC I bought about a month ago, was drained in another state
PSA ~ these are USB issued MCGCs which are notorious for getting hacked immediately after activation. Best NOT to buy these if you CANNOT drain them immediately or you run the risk of holding on plastics with zero balance. This deal is only for those with HIGH RISK TOLERANCE and lots of patience to get back their funds when they get hacked.
To add, these are also difficult to drain at WM for MOs and load to Serve/BB so if you don’t know or don’t have patience for the cancel/change payment technique, bring them to grocery stores to drain ASAP.
Thanks Mimi, good reminder on using these quickly.
2,000 UR points for these? I didn’t know you could get 10X on the Ink at office supply stores. Is this a current deal or did you mean 1,000 UR points for each $200 card. Hoping the former…
🙁 that would be amazing, but it’s just a typo. Thanks!
Dang.
KROGER MO’s, will they work there? …………………………. Anyone?
I’m not familiar with Kroger
I’ve long used precisely these m/c’s for purchasing mo’s at Kroger. YMMV, yet in my area, there’s a limit of $750 per mo. Always find it good practice to NOT try to purchase MO’s at Kroger when there’s any lines. (worth being deferential to other customers)
