Visa and Mastercard Near Deal With Merchants That Would Change Rewards Landscape

If an agreement is finalized, consumers could see big changes at the register. Merchants that accept one kind of Visa credit card wouldn’t have to accept all Visa credit cards, for example. Under the current talks, credit-card acceptance would be divided into several categories including rewards credit cards, credit cards with no rewards programs, and commercial cards, the people familiar with the matter said.

More than 1,400 flight cancellations on Monday

More than 1,400 flights are canceled Monday, the fourth day of disruptions imposed by federal transportation officials amid the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. About 5.5% of flights are affected ‒ more than the 4% of cuts presently ordered by the Federal Aviation Administration to offset an air traffic controller shortage. Cuts are scheduled to step up to 10% by Nov. 14, but it’s unclear whether a resolution to end the shutdown, which is expected this week, will make a difference.

US judge rejects Capital One $425 million settlement with depositors

A federal judge rejected Capital One’s $425 million settlement with depositors who said they were cheated out of high interest rates, saying the payout was too small and millions of account holders would continue to be short-changed. The class action settlement was intended to resolve claims that Capital One froze rates at 0.3% on its “high interest” 360 Savings accounts, while quietly offering rates above 4% to new customers on similarly named 360 Performance Savings accounts.
