Icelandic Low-Cost Carrier PLAY Ceases Operations, Leaving Travelers Stranded

Icelandic Low-Cost Carrier PLAY Ceases Operations

Low-cost Icelandic airline PLAY has ceased operations just over four years after it launched with an inaugural flight from Keflavík International Airport to London Stansted Airport in June 2021.

Travelers who had booked tickets with the airline were informed on Monday that all flights were canceled effective immediately. A notice on the airline’s website reads:

Dear passenger,

Fly PLAY hf. has ceased operations, and all flights have been cancelled.

Travel alternatives

We kindly advise you to check flights with other airlines. Some carriers may offer special “rescue fares” considering the circumstances.

Refunds and passenger rights

If you purchased your ticket with a payment card, please contact your card issuer regarding a refund.

If you booked your ticket as part of a package (flight + accommodation or services) through a travel agency in the EEA, please contact your travel agent for assistance.

Some rights may also apply under EU Air Passenger regulations. In case of bankruptcy, claims should be directed to the appointed administrator.

The Board and management of PLAY said that “every effort was made to reach a different outcome. This decision is the most painful one imaginable in this situation and has only been taken because all other options were deemed exhausted. The Board sincerely apologizes to everyone negatively affected by this outcome.”
