Best Premium Card? The Winner Might Surprise You!

Best Premium Card

Premium cards are all the hype nowadays. Top credit card issuers have recently launched new cards, revamped their premium products or are planning to do so.

Chase relaunched the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card with an annual fee of $795 and Citi just revealed the brand new Citi Strata Elite with a fee of $595. American Express has teased a refresh of its Amex Platinum Card with a rumored annual fee of $895.

The trend is towards higher annual fees, and more coupon-style credits. Credit card issuers can claim that their products provide thousands of dollars in annual benefits. But usually credits are for obscure merchants, or just straight up annoying to use.

So which one is the best premium card out there, or how do you even choose? Some people value specific transfer partners, some are willing to take the time and maximize those pesky coupons, and others just prefer simplicity.

So I decided to pose the question in our DDG Facebook Group, asking members to vote for their favorite card. This is based just on the annual fee and ongoing perks and benefits.

This is not a very scientific test and it only includes about 530 votes. But still the results might surprise you. Here are the top cards, as voted by our Facebook Group members:

  • Capital One Venture X – 41% of the vote
  • Amex Platinum Card – 27%
  • Amex Hilton Aspire – 9%
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve – 8%
  • Chase Ritz-Carlton – 7%
  • Citi Strata Elite – 2%

Guru’s Wrap-up

Capital One Venture X is the clear winner in our pull. This is a simple card with a couple of simple credits and benefits that still has a somewhat affordable fee. Just the travel credit and the annual point bonus will cover the annual fee. That simplicity seems to be winning people over, compares the endless list of coupons that we’re seeing from Amex, Chase and even Citi now.
