Earn Amex Points with Rakuten’s New Card

Earn Amex Points with Rakuten Card

Yesterday, the no annual fee Rakuten American Express® Card launched in the U.S. Although the card is offering a weak welcome offer of $25 back after spending $500 in the first three months of card membership, Rakuten confirmed that you will have the ability to earn Amex Membership Reward points if you previously opted in.

That means you could earn up to 10x points per dollar on dining through a Rakuten partner restaurant, 2x on groceries and restaurants, and 1x on all other purchases. You’ll also earn an extra 4x bonus points per dollar on purchases through Rakuten (up to $7,000 of spending).

To sign up for Rakuten and apply for a Rakuten Card, click here.

Rakuten members who refer new members to Rakuten through the “Refer a Friend” program will also receive $30 Cash Back (or 3,000 Amex points) once the new member has made qualifying purchases totaling at least $30 within 90 days of signing up. If you don’t have a Rakuten account yet, you can sign up now to earn a $3o bonus.

Guru’s Wrap-up

The unimpressive welcome bonus of 250 Amex points (or $25) is disappointing. However, the earn rates and bonus categories are incredibly attractive for a no annual fee card. This is a great alternative to earning Amex points if you don’t want to pay the $325 American Express Gold Card annual fee just to earn 4x on restaurants.
