American Airlines Pauses Mile Expiration Through End of Year

American Airlines paused mileage expiration in March as the coronavirus pandemic stopped virtually all air travel. Then on July 1, expiration resumed for those over the age of 22.5 years old. Now American Airlines has once again paused mile expiration.

American Airlines will suspend award mile expiration through December 31, 2020. This includes retroactively reactivating any miles that have expired since July 1, 2020 at no charge. Members who paid to extend or reactivate miles since July 1, 2020 will be issued bonus miles (at a later date) to offset the price paid. HT: JonNYC

Dan’s Deals writes that “miles that expired since July 1 will be reinstated and miles that were set to expire through Dec. 31 will now expire on January 1, 2021.”

It was a strange move to resume mile expiration back in July as travel was still far from normal. Most other airlines have also paused expiration for miles.
