Chase Freedom Unlimited Gets New Bonus Categories

Chase Freedom Unlimited currently has a big welcome bonus with $200 in cash for spending $500 and also 5% back on groceries for the first year up to $12,000. The card also has new limited time perks such a free DashPass for three months and discount after that and 5% total cash back on all Lyft rides.

Starting next month, the card will get even better. Current and new cardholders will be able to take advantage of new bonus categories such as 5% on select travel booking and 3% at drugstores and dining, including delivery. These are the same perks offered on the new Chase Freedom Flex that was announced today.

Guru’s Wrap-up

The new categories make the Chase Freedom Unlimited card an even better option for everyday spending. Earning 1.5X Ultimate Rewards on all purchases is a good option to have, but starting in September you will also earn 3% back on dining and drugstores. The welcome bonus is also sweet considering that this is a no-fee card, and very competitive in general. The new earning categories will be added automatically for new and current Chase Freedom Unlimited cardholders, so it doesn’t make a difference if you apply now or wait until September.

The new Freedom Flex card also has the same earning structure, with the only difference being that it is a Mastercard and earn 1% everywhere with 5% rotating quarterly categories. That card will replace the current Chase Freedom Card and is considered the same product. But the Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited are considered separate products.

These no-fee Chase cards get even better when you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Chase Sapphire Reserve. You can transfer the points to travel partners or get more value out of them by booking directly with points through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
