Crazy Mistake Amex Offer for $9,000 Cash Back for $9,000 Spend

Update: The email has changed now and no longer shows the offer. Even after completing the spending it shows you getting back points instead of cash, which is clearly what they meant in the first place.

American Express is targeting some people with a crazy offer that should get you $9,000 in free spend if honored. But it’s obviously a mistake. Probably worth doing mostly for the very slim chance of it actually being honored.

This Amex Offer with get you $3,000 cash back when you spend $3,000. And you can repeat it up to three times to earn up to $9,000 cash back for spending $9,000. It was probably meant to be just $30 or 3,000 Membership Rewards points. An extra 1x in that case, which is still decent.

There’s different variations of the offer as mentioned in the comments. There’s even some offers that will give you back more than what you spend.

Check your emails and see if you have it. Not sure if you have a chance of fighting to get the $9K in free spend as it is stated in the offer itself. The email is likely sent out to people who have American Express credit cards that earn Membership Rewards points. Check out some these best cards below:

  1. Saw the offer, knew what they meant. There’s bhi way they will honor $9k. Spending 9k is not small, not taking chance

  2. Clearly a mistake. I received the same email yesterday and in the details Below your cropped screenshot it correctly mentions 3,000 points being the promotion. Got me excited when I first saw it, but definitely not going to be spending $9,000 in the hopes that Amex gives anyone the authority to authorize an actual $9,000 credit. Anyone speedily spending right now is surely doing so at their own peril. Even when you clicked the link yesterday to enroll in the offer, the offer screen mentioned Points, not Dollars, which I have no doubt is all Amex will be offering.

    • It’s still an extra point per dollar so the offer is still a good one depending on what cards you get it. But yes, $9,000 in free spend from Amex would be a bit crazy. One can dream though, but shouldn’t go out spending just for that reason.

  3. Mine was spend $500, get $500 cash back, but like the others said, when I logged into my account, it changed to membership points instead of cash, and the email totally changed by itself too.

  4. I received an email that actually said spend $1,500 or more to get $3,000 cash back! Going to spend it to see what happens!

  5. I received the email last night was pretty sure it said this has already been added to your card. It was the 3000 for 3000 however after seeing your post I went back to email and guess what the email completely changed…it now says discover your latest offers. I logged onto my account and it shows nothing was added to my card and I don’t see it in the available offers, guess I should have clicked on it last night but how in the world did the email itself change.

  6. It’s a non-starter. Mine said spend $1500, get $2500 cash back. When I redeemed it changed to spend $2500, get 1,500 points.
