There’s several American Express credit cards that offer reimbursement for airline incidental fees such as checked bags, seat fees and in-flight refreshments. You get these credits on the Amex Platinum Card, Gold Card and Hilton Honors Aspire Card. If you already use your card for incidental fees then you should be OK, but some people just purchase airline gift cards to get these credits.
In the last week or two we are seeing some issues with these airline gift card purchases. There’s a few data points showing that some airline gift card purchases are not triggering the Amex credits. You can check out these threads on FlyerTalk and Reddit to see more info. There’s still gift card purchases that are working fine, so this is not a change in policy. American Airlines gift cards are the ones that are having issues and they are now coding as “GIFT CERTIFICATE” instead of “MISC”. It’s not clear when all this started, but it could be with purchases made in February. The last purchase I made was for Southwest gift cards back in December 30th and that went through fine.
I don’t think there’;s any reason to panic yet. This could be a glitch or just a delay. In your eligible Amex cards it says that if you do not see a credit for a qualifying incidental purchase after 4 weeks, simply call the number on the back of your Card. So this is still well inside that time period. And it is affecting mainly American Airlines gift cards, which could mean just a coding change from the airline itself. It could be a good idea to hold off on airline gift card purchases for now, at least American Airlines gift cards. Or just test it out with a small denomination first.
