New Restrictive Rules for Chase and American Express SPG/Marriott Credit Cards

The merger of Marriott and SPG has been announced months ago. But now we are getting close to the full integration of the rewards programs on August 16th, including their credit card offerings soon after. Marriott opted for dual issuers for its credit cards, Chase and American Express. They will keep some of the old cards and also issue new cards soon, on August 26th. Some enhanced benefits will also kick in at that date. But there’s also some worrying new bonus restrictions for Marriott SPG credit cards.

New Bonus Rules for Marriott/SPG Cards

That 8/26 date is when new application rules will also go into effect. The rules are even more restrictive than before if you can believe that. Chase’s 5/24 and 24 month rules should still apply and American Express’ lifetime rule will apply as well. Then there’s the specific rules laid out for each card. It should be pointed out that these specific rules and eligibility will be provided by Marriott. Chase and Amex will not exchange any consumer data.

TPG reports that there would be an automated tool for Marriott to communicate between Chase and Amex, and customers will be notified during the application process if they’re eligible for a welcome offer. That should be similar to the new tool introduced by American Express.

So now, here’s the list of restrictions that apply to each card (HT: VftW), on top of the rules that already apply to all Chase and Amex cards. As a reminder, the Chase Ritz-Carlton card is no longer available for sign-ups but existing cardholders will get to keep the card and will also get some enhanced benefits on 8/26.
