Alamo Drafthouse Challenges MoviePass With New Subscription Service

Boutique theater chain Alamo Drafthouse is jumping in on the Moviepass business model. The new Alamo Drafthouse subscription service is called “Alamo Season Pass”. It seems very convenient compared to the competition. Simply use the Drafthouse mobile app to make your purchase, and once you arrive at the theater it’ll unlock your tickets. There’s no need to wait in line to scan your barcode at the box office. Your server will check your ticket once you’re seated, when they take your food or drink order. You can purchase extra tickets for your party when you make your seat reservation.

However, there’s not a whole lot of details about the new program. “Each week we’ll invite people from the wait-list to purchase an Alamo Season Pass. The price and other features of the season pass will be detailed on your invitation. Once you receive your invitation, you’ll have two weeks to decide if you want to purchase your pass.” That’s the description on their FAQ page.

The new program will launch on July 18th, and it will only be available at the Yonkers, New York location. You’ll need to be a member of Alamo’s free rewards program to participate. We might see it expanded to all their locations after that.

Alamo Drafthouse only has 35 locations nationwide, with more than half of them in Texas. They’re a different kind of movie theater. They offer food and drink service inside the theater, including cold beers. The seating is arranged with rows of cabaret style tables in front of each row of seats, with an aisle between each row to accommodate waiter service. Customers write their orders on slips of paper, which are picked up by black-clad waiters.
