Update 4/2/2018: The link I have in the post is now dead. I don;t know of any working links. Let me know if you have any.
Update 4/1/2018: There were rumors that the Mercedes Benz Amex Platinum card would go away after March 31, but the working application link is still here. Rumors were wrong, but that doesn’t mean it will stay around for much longer. But at least you have a little more time to think your plan of attack.
Back in the beginning of March I wrote about American Express and Mercedes Benz Card ending their partnership in January 2019. The main reason why this is important is that American Express offers a Mercedes Benz Amex Platinum credit card, which is one more option to take advantage of the Platinum bonus and perks.
Here’s the text that’s showing up on the application page for the two American Express Mercedez Benz cards:
Please note that the American Express and Mercedes Benz Card program will end in January 2019. Applicants can continue to apply for the Platinum Card from American Express exclusively for Mercedes-Benz, but, if approved, the Card will be replaced with a different American Express Card at the time when the Card program ends.
We knew that the card would disappear before the end of their partnership. But, it is happening earlier than I expected. Some links have already been pulled as reported by Doctor of Credit, but you can still apply through this link. Now there’s rumors that today might actually be the last day to apply for the Mercedes Benz Amex Platinum card. I had read this earlier but was reminded today by this Miles to Memories post.
- Platinum Card from American Express Exclusively for Mercedes-Benz
- Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $5,000 in purchases on the Card in the first three months
- Annual Fee $550
- Mercedes-Benz Credit Card from American Express
- Earn 10,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $1,000 in purchases on the Card in the first three months
- Annual Fee $95
Today could be the last day to apply and a last chance for those who want the Amex Platinum benefits or just another Membership Rewards bonus. This is considered a different product from the regular Amex Platinum card so you should receive the bonus even if you’ve had that card in the past. The bonus is only 60K Membership Rewards points and you have to pay a $550 annual fee. You can offset that fee with $200 per calendar year toward incidental air travel fees, $200 in annual Uber credits and more perks that come with Amex Platinum cards. If you do apply, you need to spend $5,000 in purchases within 3 months to get the bonus. Make sure you can handle the spending without gift card purchases, as Amex has been cracking down on that practice lately and has been clawing back bonuses.
Do you think it’s worth applying?
