Amex Changes Start Date For Reward Year On Blue Cash Cards

American Express is changing the way a Reward Year is calculated for your Blue Cash cards. For now, a Reward Year is 12 billing periods in a row beginning with the one that starts in the calendar month in which your Card account anniversary occurs.

But starting June 30th, that will change. Here’s the new rules for Blue Cash Everyday/Preferred and the Old Blue Cash card.

  • Blue Cash Everyday/Preferred
    • Starting on June 30, 2017, an annual reward year will be a calendar year.
  • Old Blue Cash
    • As of June 30, 2017, a Reward Year will begin the day after your Blue Cash account anniversary date.

Guru’s Wrap-Up

The start of the new Reward Year is important for those why try to maximize cashback on these cards. This simplifies the starting date. If you have an Old Blue Cash card, you can call or chat to find out your account anniversary date.

  1. Slight change for OBC but it’s still based on anniversary date. Old rule is.. Reward Year is 12 billing periods in a row beginning with the one that starts in the calendar month in which your Card account anniversary occurs

  2. I’ve always known my exact anniversary dates on our BC cards. For a while I thought BCs would also turn to calendar months that will end on Dec 31 to earn RDs for all but now I believe nothing has changed. Let’s say one of our cards anniversary date is July 7, that is the end date for earning the 5% cat bonus for year 2017. Beginning July 8, that account re-sets so I have to meet the first $6,500 spend before I start earning the 5% on gas, supermarkets and drugstores up to $50,000 and unlimited 1% on all other purchases.

For our BCE cards, it has always been based on calendar year, I don’t understand what has changed unless I missed something?

      • isn’t the calendar year reset ONLY for BCP and BCE? if it is, then nothing has changed for me because that has always been what’s implemented for us since start of 2013.

as for OBC, I clarified with a rep via chat and he said I understood it correctly that MY calendar year is still based on anniversary date and will reset on July 8 so the last day to earn 5% on purchases will be July 7 (exact anniversary date) provided I have not reached the cap by then. If I am over the $50K cap, then I will only earn 1% on those 5% categories. I will verify via phone and see if a different rep tells me differently but for now nothing has change as far as I’m concerned.

      • btw, I wasn’t aware the calendar year included purchases for 1/1 counted for the previous year’s purchases. I see what you’re saying now, but other than that, no changes in our OBC accounts since I was told it is NOT going by calendar year, just the BCE, BCP.
