Chase Rumored To Get Rid Of 5x Categories For Ink Cards

DoC is reporting that changes are coming to the Chase Ink cards. based on a source who’s been reliable in the past, Chase are planning on changing the 5x category on the Chase INK cards to just 3x.

The good news is that this change will not affect existing cardholders, but only new card applicants that will receive the card after the rule goes into effect. That is expected to happen in the next few months.

To make up for the removal of the 5x categories, 2x categories will become 3x. There will also be some new 3x categories added such as advertising and shipping. Annual bonused spending will be capped at $100K, which is the total of the current 5x and 2x categories. Here’s what the card earns now, and what it will earn once these rumored changes kick in.

Current earning rates:

  • Earn 5X points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services each account anniversary year.
  • Earn 2X points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and hotel accommodations when purchased directly with the hotel each account anniversary year.
  • All other purchases are only 1 point per dollar

New rumored earning rates:

  • Earn 3X points per $1 on the first $100,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores, gas stations, hotel accommodations, on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services, and possibly advertising and shipping each account anniversary year.
  • All other purchases are only 1 point per dollar

If you don’t have the card, and you’re thinking about getting it, you should probably apply soon. The Ink cards fall under the 5/24 rule so it might be tough for some. Checking in branch for targeted offers might be the way to go. I still have my Ink Plus card and even my Ink Bold card (annual fee was waived just 2 weeks ago, again) so hopefully they keep the 5x categories going for a while for current cardmembers.

The current offer for the Ink Plus card is 60K, but there’s usually in branch offers of 70K and targeted offers as high as 100K on the card.
