Citi Cracks Down On Churning, Limit Each Brand To Once Per 24 Months

Citi has taken another step on cracking down on churners. Just recently they increased the wait time for repeat bonuses from 18 months to 24. Now they have added another major restriction. DoC report that the 24 month rule will apply to a brand of cards, instead of individual cards.

Update: New rules go into effect on August 28th

Here’s the new language for the ThankYou brand:

Bonus ThankYou points are not available if you have had ThankYou Preferred, ThankYou Premier or Citi Prestige cards opened or closed in the past 24 months.

The same new restriction applies to AAdvantage, Hilton and Expedia cards.

At least Citi will treat personal and business cards as separate products. So you will be eligible for a bonus on a personal AAdvantage card even if you have opened or closed a business AAdvantage card in the last 24 months.

This is obviously a huge blow that really limits the number of cards you can get from Citi within 24 months. The only way around this rule would be the same tricks that could be used to circumvent the old 24 month per card rule. Apply through a targeted offer that doesn’t have the 24 month language and try out the World Elite loophole which seems to have some success lately.
