Acorns, $5 Bonus And Easy Investing Through An App

Investing is usually scary and intimidating when you first get started. I’m not a big investor myself but I have been through the entry process and it feels like you’re jumping into the unknown while risking your hard earned money. That’s what makes Acorns and interesting app. It makes investing easy and you start with small amounts.

What is Acorns

The Acorns app links with your bank account and credit cards, rounding up daily purchases and automatically investing the ‘change’ into a diversified portfolio of ETFs. The idea is to create an easy path into the stock market for younger, new investors, removing common entry barriers such as high fees and buy in prices. Acorns recently created a web-based version as well for desktop and portable users.

Although Acorns makes it cheaper to invest, it’s not free. It will cost you $1 per month for accounts under $5,000, or 0.25% per year for accounts over $5,000. Still significantly less than a traditional broker. Individuals under 24 years of age and those attending college pay no fees. As of last month, Acorns has opened 900,000 investment accounts, 75% of which belong to millennials.

Sign up process

I signed up a few weeks ago and just in the last few days I really started using the app. It’s a well designed app that simplifies the information. To get started you download Acorns from the App Store or Google Play and create an account. Going through my referral link will get us both $5, or you can just use the referral code FHDY2W. You have to enter some personal information such as name, address, birthday, income, SSN etc. Once you have your account you then link your bank account and credit cards.account, link your bank accounts and credit cards. This will be done instantly for most major banks.

Your money can be invested in five fund types, ranging from conservative, which puts most into cash and bonds, through to aggressive which has over 80% allocated to equities. Based on the information you entered, you’ll get a suggestion for the best suited investment strategy. I was suggested a Moderately Conservative Portfolio but I changed it to Moderate.

Once your account is created, it will take 2-3 days for the initial deposit to go through and your account will be ready for investing. After that you can chose to add more funding or you can just rely on the round-up transfers that come from monitoring your linked accounts. Purchases will be rounded up to the nearest dollar and will be added to your Acorns account. You can have all transactions rounded up automatically, or you can select only certain transactions.

Found Money

On top of that, Acorns has also launched a rewards program called “Found Money,” which will give you bonus investment cash when you shop at partners like, eBay, Boxed, Airbnb, Jet.com, 1-800-Flowers, and Hotel Tonight etc.
