10% Extra Cashback (Doubled) on $10,000 With Discover & Apple Pay

Discover announced that on September 16, cardmembers will be able to add their Discover cards to Apple Pay. While that is nice news, here comes the great part. Discover is rewarding cardmembers in the U.S. who use their Discover cards through Apple Pay with a 10% Cashback Bonus.

Discover coming to Apple Pay

From September 16, to the end of the year, cardmembers who pay with their Discover card using Apple Pay will automatically earn an extra 10% Cashback Bonus on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases. Discover it Miles, Miles and Escape cardmembers will earn an extra 10 miles per dollar on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases.

This could be even greater news for those who have the Double Cash Back offer on their Discover It cards. The $1,000 extra cash back that you’ll be able to make until the end of the year, should be doubled, since this was confirmed as “everything doubled” by Discover reps in the past. If you don’t have a Discover It card then you should definitely sign up. With my referral link you get $50 after first purchase (doubled in a year), and I get $50 as well (my mom will actually, since I already reached my limit of 10 referrals).

In stores, Apple Pay works with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch, as well as iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, upon availability. You’re out of luck if you have an Android phone like me, but maybe you could use a friend’s or family member’s phone and add your card to their Apple Pay. Or you could buy an iPhone and still come out a winner.

Discover is surely living up to it’s recent title as America’s Best Credit Card Company.

How To Add a Discover Card to Apple Pay

After upgrading for free to iOS 9, Discover cardmembers can go to the Wallet app to get started. If cardmembers already have a Discover card on file with iTunes, all they need to do is enter the security code, or they can choose to add a new Discover Card.

Offer Details

  • 10% Cashback or 10x miles on up to $10,000
  • Offer ends 12/31/2015
  • Valid for in-store purchases only

Update

I missed the “extra” part on the 10% cash back (maybe I was just a bit too excited while typing up the post) which would make it 11% cashback on everything as DoC points out. Also Milesperday has confirmed with Discover that as expected, it will be doubled in a year. That’s a whopping 22% back on $10,000. That’s $2,200 per Discover card. Just amazing!!!

  1. Today is the day, the ios 9 just came out about 15 minutes ago, at least for me it did. I went a bought an iPhone 6 to take part of this. Now we will see if apple pay cashback works as intended. I will test it out tonight or tomorrow. I have called my local stores and they have apple pay available so we will see. Even if you purchase an iPhone you can always turn around and sell it used and get 80%+ return of which you paid for or if you want buy a used iPhone 6 and use the wifi on it. It will work without a service fyi, that I tested.

If you plan using a apple watch, it needs to be used in conjunction with the iPhone 5. You can use it with the iPhone 6….but that would be silly since the ip6 has the feature without the use of the phone.

    • Thanks for the tips Mike. Let us know how it goes. I was reading about errors with updating to ios 9 yesterday. People were reporting failed attempts.

I plan on using a family member’s iPhone myself.

      • UPDATE** Ok so after last night I can say that yes it works like a charm. Not only was I able to purchase 2500 worth last night using apple pay at a walgreens, I had no problems as well on redbird at my local target(somewhere in Idaho :P).

*note on that, only using the new ios9 update did the discover card take on apple pay as well, after the update I had no issues adding my card to it. As well I had no problems adding my wifes card and my mothers card to it, It went through the typical security process for each card but if you follow the instructions etc it should give you no problems.

*The Bancorp VGC at walgreens work just fine, if anyone has any issues with theirs I understand it might be hit and miss sometimes. Ive found that calling on the call helps activate it as well as using it one time to buy per say an item for a dollar to set your pin works like a charm, and I did not have to wait to use it, I literally bought something in line at target and went straight to the CSR table afterwords.

*For my sake I got ahold of discover via chat and just asked some very simple questions etc. The 10% did start yesterday so to clear the rumours of if it did or did not. New customers indeed will enjoy the x2 at the end of the year. As well I got a better list of what stores take part of the 5% cashback. I also found out that you should call any store you shop at to see if they have apple pay, apple does not list every store atm and finding an actual list is about impossible.

Now I just need to get another Redbird Card…..lol. Since they do not sell them anywhere in my state or close….sooo anyone help me out 🙂

Hope that helps and clears the air about apple pay. I give discover+applepay a thumbs up!

  2. This sounds like a good option to get an iPhone or Apple Watch. I also read something about renting a phone for 2-3 months. Not sure if that’s worth it.

  3. Sorry for the confusion Danny. That was coming from someone else not me so I don’t quite understand the logistics in the numbers etc x_X. I had also realized after reading “closely” that the I phone 6 seriers or the iPhone 5 + watch or the only ones able to do the %10 cash back via apple pay as its in store only for it, you say that in your post as well…..I somehow did not register it.

    • I think I see where the 16% comes from. But it’s not related to the Apple Pay promo. You can buy an iphone on Amazon, which is a 5% bonus category with Discover now, and that will be doubled. So 10% cash back.

You also get 6% cash back from TopCachBack which should make it a total of 16%.

      Just an idea.

  4. This is what the website says if anyone is curious. All you need is a wifi connection to use apple pay, confirmed by tech support today, called them 🙂

You can start using Apple Pay as soon as you add a credit or debit card to Passbook. Here’s what you need:
•iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus (Apple Pay in stores and within apps)
•iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3 (Apple Pay within apps)
•iOS 8.1 or later in the US or iOS 8.3 or later in the UK
•United States or United Kingdom as your selected region
•Touch ID or passcode on your device
•An Apple ID signed in to iCloud
•Supported card from a participating bank

      • yeah, or use the local wifi if its available. Great for those that don’t want to use a new service. Will have to use some testing. Someone from flyertalk forums was telling me he is using the double dip to buy iPhone 6 and then resell them. 16% cashback through apple pay, he is buying online through apple pay, of which I don’t know how to do yet. Can update once I get my pad and give it a whirl. Like you said in your post it would be a great deal if you just signed up to get the x2 at the end of year bonus too, which I got so. My guess is iPhone 6 x $500ea = $1000 @ %16cb = 160×2(x2 bonus) = $320. Sounds great but im hesitant to see if this is actually true.

        • Mike,

I’m not sure how the 16% works but I’m guessing you’ll have to use one of the current 5% bonus categories for the Discover card or some cash back portal.

Your math is a bit off. 6×500=3000

  5. Danny,

I have had a Discover card for a while and I didn’t call to add the double cash back. I applied for a second card now and got approved so I know I can use the 10% promo with Apple Pay on the new card.

What about the old Discover card that I have? Can I still use the Apple Pay promo?

    • Yes you can. The Apple Pay promo is separate from the Double Cash back promo. Any Discover card will work for the Apple Pay promo, but it gets much better if that Discover card is enrolled in the Double Cash Back promo.

It’s still a nice deal even with your old Discover card. You’ll get 11% cash back.

  6. Can I use apple pay to buy apple phones and get the 10% cash back? Im curious on that is all. Thanks. I have a few people that want the new iPhone 6 and are willing to let me buy it for them, be great deal if I could use the cashback % as I just got approved last week.

    • You’ll earn 10% at any store that accepts Apple Pay when using your Discover card. So yes you should be able to earn that 10% when buying iPhones and that gets doubled in a year.

      • thanks for the info Danny. I don’t have an apple phone etc however If I get an ipad air 2 or mini 3, can I just use the apple pay without having a service plan through anyone? I love my current phone too much to switch lol. I don’t know how apple products work, was curious if I just got an apple ipad or mini I could use the apple pay without a service with anyone, just use it for the app?

        • I’m not a Apple user either, but if you’re able to use Apple Pay on those devices then you should be fine. iPad Air 2 or Mini 3 weren’t mentioned in the news release about Apple Pay and Discover, so just double check that you’re able to use them with Apple Pay.

  7. If you have iPhone 5 then you can just get an Apple Watch and use it for Apple Pay. Cheaper then looking for an iPhone 6

    • When you log in, at the bottom of the page under CASHBACK BONUS you should see Refer a Friend.

Use the twitter referral to get the link instantly, instead of the email. It takes a while sometimes for the referral email to arrive.

You’re also provided with a link to check the progress or referrals.
