Officials at Long Island’s MacArthur Airport are hoping to bring in budget airline Wow Air, which operates out of Reykjavik, Iceland, to the Islip Town-owned facility, according to Airport Commissioner Robert Schaefer. It’s about five-and-a-half hours by air from Islip to Iceland so the move makes sense.
The idea is that travelers could fly between Long Island MacArthur in Ronkonkoma, NY and Keflavik Airport in Reykjavik, Iceland, then on to 17 other destinations in Europe served by Wow such as Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Milano etc..
Wow currently operates only in two airports in the US, Boston and Washinton DC. They provide quick and sometimes unbelievable prices, such as this deal not too long ago. Just $99 from Boston to Iceland.
“They are a perfect fit for us,” Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said of Wow Air. “This is really exciting and could be an incredible opportunity.”
There’s currently a proposal to move MacArthur’s terminal on Veterans Memorial Highway to the opposite side of the airfield, adjacent to the Long Island Rail Road station in Ronkonkoma. That would make teh commute much easier and also create a transit hub, immediately off the Long Island Expressway, arguably unparalleled on Long Island.
Southwest and U.S. Airways Express operate at MacArthur Airport, along with many private jets and small planes.
